  • “Do I need avalanche training/certification?”

Nope—while we always encourage avalanche education (and BSBG is Montana’s leading provider of avalanche education,) this is a fully guided trip. Your guides will always take you to the best snow and the safest terrain for the current conditions, so you can just focus on enjoying the ride.

“How much skiing will we do each day?”

Depending on conditions and group goals and fitness, we typically ski between 3-,6000 vertical feet a day. Our only objective is to be sure everyone having a great time!

“Will I hold up my group if I’m not in rockstar touring shape?”

Not at all. Many people are concerned with holding up the group—it’s almost never even a consideration. But we can accommodate a huge variety of experience and ability levels, with tons of terrain literally out the front door, and a talented guide team that’s committed to providing an awesome experience. We have had guests as young as 12, and as old as 78 enjoy the incredible skiing at Bell Lake Yurt!

“What do I need to bring to the yurt?”

Just personal gear (pack list is available on the website), alcohol if desired, a few favorite trail snacks, and an appetite for adventure. We provide and porter all meals (and you’ll eat very well), as well as yurt supplies, etc. The yurt also has a Bluetooth speaker, and a selection of books, games, puzzles, cards, etc.

“Is there cell reception at the yurt—how can I check in with family?”

There is no reception at the yurt, but most carriers have full service at the lake, which we pass at least once a day. A quick text check-in is generally possible every day, but don’t plan on talking—it gets cold quickly standing in the wind at the lake!

“Can I charge my devices at Bell Lake Yurt?”

We have a small solar system for the lights, but do not have the ability to charge your devices. We find it’s almost never necessary—since there is no cell reception at the yurt, you can leave your phone in airplane mode the entire trip, and it’ll last several days, if not the entire time. If you must have backup power, a small battery pack good for one or two charges is plenty.

“What if I get hurt during the trip?”

All of our guides hold current certifications as Wilderness First Responders or EMTs, and train every year for treatment and evacuation scenarios. Some of our guides work professionally as paramedics during the summer months; others are active with Search and Rescue. Our talented team has the knowledge, tools, plans, and experience to deal effectively with a medical emergency, and evacuate if necessary.

“What is a typical guide gratuity?”

The BSBG team works extremely hard to provide an optimal experience, and gratuity is an important part of any guides’ income. Besides finding you the best skiing and riding, BSBG guides also cook, clean, split wood, carry water, entertain, and genuinely value taking care of you. Typical guide gratuity is 20% of total trip cost, split between your guides. Thanks!
